Todays trip was absolutely phenomenal! We started off blackfishing and our first drop only produced a few fish, with a lot of shorts. Capt. Steven Jr. then headed off to another wreck and it was on fire! The first fish landed here was a 13 pounder! The whole boat was bailing big blackfish! Not many fish were under 5 pounds, and there were a lot of 8-10 pounders! We fished for 1 hour here, and everyone easily caught their limits. After ensuring everyone had their limit, we took a fast ride down to Coxes Ledge. Each drop here produced some big sea bass, and some Cod. Best of all, the dogfish were barely a nuisance. The last drop was fantastic, with many double headers of sea bass on one hook, and a cod on the other! The day ended up to be a great one. Every single person on board went home with a limit of blackfish, some sea bass and cod, which is the nice part about this trip... take home a bag of blackfish, as well as a mixed bag of other great fish. John DeTemple of Montauk, NY landed the 13 pound bulldog and took the blackfish pool. Joe Walsh from East Islip, NY took the Cod pool with a 20 pounder. The Viking Star returned yesterday from a 3 Day charter with Marc Wyman and company who were full of smiles. We left the dock on Monday morning and started trolling at around 9am. It didnt take long before we started catching some nice size Mahi Mahis. All day long we picked at the Mahis but that was about it. Then at around 6pm at almost dark we picked up a nice wahoo weighing in at around 60lb. We anchored up for the night and caught a few Mahis and that was it until around 4am when we hooked into and landed a nice pinkie Swordfish weighing around 100lbs. After that as the sun came up we had a run of Yellowfin Tuna and landed some nice fish all between 50 and 60 pounds. After the Yellowfin stopped biting some Albacore started and we boated some of them. On day 2 we trolled again fro a while but again only caught Mahi Mahi. That afternoon we got ourselves set up for some bottom fishing and we were very well rewarded. Captain Steven Jr stopped for a couple of drifts and we caught 18 big Wreckfish  up to 21lbs as well as some nice Tilefish and some Hake. We again anchored up for the night and almost immediatley hooked into a large Albacore and landed him. We got one more right away and then the night slowed down. There were tons of Squid around the boat both Ilex and Loligo and we filled bags of fresh Calamari and plenty of baits. Besides that we hooked into a couple of Blue Sharks and one short Swordfish. Again once the sun began to rise we had a good run of Albacore for about an hour putting a few more Tuna in the boat. By the end of the trip we had a very mixed bag of Species on the boat which was split up between everyone on the charter allowing everyone onboard to leave with some Yellowfin, Albacore,Swordfish, Wahoo, Wrecfish, Hake, Tile and Mahi. All in all a very fun trip with a great bunch of guys.

3 Day Tuna and Tile (Oct 3rd - Oct 5th)
The trips went very well once the wind dropped out on Saturday morning. Friday turned out to be a downwind troll with 20- 25 knott winds for just a couple of Mahi Mahi. As the night came we anchored up in 71.5 degree water. The area looked good with plenty of Squid and tuna grass but only delivered 6 small Yellowfin and one 115lb Bluefin. The sun came up and the winds were GONE and it looked like we had a beautiful day ahead. By 9am we were on our first drift for bottom fishing but the remaining ground swell made bottom fishing difficult until about 2pm and then all hell broke loose. Captain Steven Jr stubborness paid off with a lot of double headers coming over the rails. Tile, Cod, Hake, Pollack and Cusk for the rest of the afternoon until sundown with the Trophy Tile weighing in at 41.3lb. By 8pm we anchored up on the edge in 72.0 degree water and got settled in for the night and as we were cleaning the fish from the day with 75% of the passengers hanging out bull*hiting in the stern, BANG, 1 on, 2 on... 3 4 5 6 7 on, it was better than any fire drill you ever saw. Bang, crash, snap everything went crazy but was such chaos nobody was prepared and we only got one fish to the boat. This turned out to be 140lb Bluefin but as we already had our 1 Bluefin from yesterday we released this beautiful fish. We can say that most likely all of these bites were Bluefin. As we put things back together it wasnt long until another school of Bluefin swam under the boat with 1, 2, 3 on which all turned out to be Bluefin. Then all of a sudden, 1 on and  my son Steven Jr and I looked at each other and said "This is not a Tuna, its acting like a Swordfish fight". Low and behold 45 minutes later a 175lb Swordfish was laying on the deck. With high fives and congratulions on a job well done to Mike McGregon all the lines went back in the water and it didnt take long to get more fish on which unfortunatly turned out to be bigger Bluefin. After playing tug of war with these animals we called it a trip and headed home with a handful of Tuna, a beautiful Swordfish,a very impressive bottom fish collection and a few Mahi. Everyone went home with big bags of fish fillets in their coolers. An honorable mention goes to Swordfish Mike from Staten Island who partenerd up with Pat Sullivan to collect 9 Tile to 18lb, 14 Cod to 12lb, 6 Hake and a couple of Cusk. Pat also reeled in and RELEASED a 150lb Bluefin that he caught on a jig. Good job Pat and Mike. Tilefish Vic Ferrante from the Bronx had an impressive 41.3lb Tile which he plans to have mounted. This was the winner of the trips Tilefish pool. Vic and Chris Link teamed up for 1 Yellowfin, 8 Tilefiish, 10 Cod, 4 Pollack and 4 Hake. Congratulations again to Vic on his beautiful Tile. Bluefin Jack Corragio from Point Pleasant NJ was the Tuna pool winner with 115lb Bluefin. Jack went home with a nice cooler of fish, along with his Tuna he had 5 Tile, 5 Cod, 4 Hake and 1 Cusk. Captain Steven Jr,  First Mate Steve Martinez and myself Captain Steven Sr, would like to thank everyone for hanging in there on Friday despite the weather and working so well together so we could make this the most successful trip possible.

We had a slow trip after the last big storm went through. We had beautiful water up tp 73 degrees, lots of birds and weed in the water but not much as for tuna. First day saw very slow fishing and the troll with only a few decent sized mahi-mahi being caught, but even the mahi were hesitant to chase the lure. Come night time we managed 1 alby and released 3 pup swords, we also had a a few tiger sharks, a few blue sharks. The next day we put in the extra time trolling and were able to find a couple of albies to work on and managed to get a few more fish on the boat in over time. All in all a slow trip compared to what we've been seeing. James Katsaros from Mt Sinai took the first place tuna pool, and second place wwas a split/tie between Artie Maas and Gary Lanzarone. The biggest edible was a tie between Vic Kaidash Jr and John Brisciana with a 14lbs mahi-mahi.

3 Day Tuna Trip
Captain Steven came back from a limited passenger three day trip. The first day the weather was pretty 'nautical'! The wind never dropped out like the forecast predicted so it made for a LONG day, til we got anchored up. At 8:30pm we put three yellow fin on the boat and we lost three more due to tough sea conditions. We had 4 or 5 mystery bites and we released a pup mako. Day two still fighting the weather, we started off on the morning troll with 2 albacore, we could see the fish on the machine but could not get them to bite. After two hours we moved on and found a free floating bouy, as we trolled by it we caught 4 BIG mahi mahi and noticed literally hundreds of mahi swimming around. We put bait and jiggs literally anything we could in the water and started bailing mahi mahi. For over 2 1/2 hours we worked this area and had a blast catching 8-14 pound mahi mahi. By 4pm we started looking around for a place to anchor up for the night and came across a very  spectacular sight - three sperm whales just hanging out on the surface catching their breath. For about 10 -15 minutes we had some spectacular photo opportunities!. Sperm whales are very rare to see as they can dive up to 3000 feet and stay under for up to 2 hours. We found a spot in 69.5 degree water with a good showing of bait but caught only 1 albacore, 6 or 8 sharks, another small mako caught and released, 4 or 5 mahi and lots of squid. Come sunrise we started trolling again for a few hours but no luck. We headed back for land. Captain Steven Sr, Captain Steven Jr and Mate Steve M would like to thank everyone for 'hanging in there'! Captain Steven Sr says 'The amount of effort you express is directly related to your fishing success'. Captain Steven Jr headed out this morning on a four day extreme tuna trip - more info will follow at the end of the week when the guys come back.

Sunday September 21

Block Island Porgies
We don't want to say it (in case we jinx ourselves) but it seems like things are working up to porgy time! Today we went straight to Block Island and started off on the south side. We had 3 hours of drifting for medium and large porgies. That gave us a good start, so Captain Dave decided to go proscpecting for JUMBOS.  Luckily, after a half hour run to the east we found some real big 2lbs-3lbs JUMBO porgies and some nice sea bass. Boat regular "Big" Angelou won the pool with a scale certified 4.1lbs porgy. Joe Errol took the edible pool with a 6lbs bluefish.

4 Day Tuna and Tile Trip Click Here for Pictures

The Viking Star returned last night from a fantastic 4 Day Tuna and Tile trip. With all the fishermen on the boat, Captain Steven Jr. decided to leave earlier- Sunday night- and lead out for a long steam. At daybreak on Day 1, we put the trolling lures out and trolled to the grounds, but just mahi-mahi hit the deck. We arrived at our bottom fishing grounds just after noon and with eager fishermen and empty coolers we started our bottom fishing. Immediately, bites were had and fish started coming up from the deep, including a lot of cod, some tilefish, large pollacks, cusks, and hakes. We fished right up to sundown with consistent action. Once the sun set, we went for a ride way off the bank to find some hot water. We found our water 180 miles from home, past 1000 fathoms and started drifting. Though no tuna were caught, we had a few shark bites, and caught some very rare species of other fish, including flying squid, and something closely resembling barracuda. After a long night we made our way up to the bank for Day 2.

The weather was against us to do any bottom fishing so we drilled it out on the troll. Finally in the afternoon we hooked up with some yellowfin tuna. We managed 5 smaller yellows and kept working the area. Just as it was starting to get dark, two rods screamed out! Joe Jr. and Nicky worked on one, while Tasso and Tommy worked the other. 2 Big Eyes were landed, both weighing in between 140lbs and 175lbs. We anchored up here for the night and again the night bite was slow. We lost a nice yellowfin, and released a pup swordfish, as well as a pup mako.

On Day 3 we again saw tough weather for bottom fishing in the morning, so we trolled for a while, catching a nice-sized yellowfin as well as mahi-mahi. The weather cleared up in the afternoon and we went back bottom fishing. We picked away at tilefish, pollack, cod, cusk, and hake. Our last stop was lock and load tilefish! After a couple of drifts here, the coolers filled up quick with tile- a couple weighing in over 30lbs! After dark we steamed to where we wanted to get anchored up for the night. Not long after we were on the hook, we started getting bites and we landed a small big eye around 80 pounds. Soon after we had a school of bluefin run through. They were all of bigger size, between 120-140 pounds and after getting our limit we released the rest. The remainder of the night saw little action, including another pup sword and mahi-mahi.

As soon as the sun came up on Day 4 we immediately began trolling. At 8am we got hit by a pair of albacore. For the next 4 hours it was ON! On so good that we stayed and fished, making us very late to get back to the dock. 34 Albacore were landed in a matter or hours. 2 on! 4 on! 7 on! It was very exciting action and everyone on the boat caught at least one. Finally we parted for home and on the way we loaded another nice sized yellowfin.

Our final tallies were: 34 albacore tuna, 3 big eyes, 8 yellowfin, 1 bluefin, 100-125 tilefish, over 40 cod, over 20 pollack, and about 100 hake and cusk, as well as 2 released pup swords, one pup mako, many mystery bites,  and many released bluefin. Pete Ferguson took the tuna pool with his 130 pound bluefin. Ross Dale took the tilefish pool with a 38 pounder. Additionally, Fred Mayer took the edible pool with a 27lbs pollack. Honorable mentions go to Bob the Reverend who has never caught a tuna until this trip, and he landed 3! Tosso had a 36lbs tile, and between him and his fishing buddy Tommy, neither of whom had caught tuna or tile before, they had 1 big eye, albacore, a yellowfin, and a cooler full of tile!

Given the previous horrible tuna reports, and the terrible bottom fishing conditions we still stuck it out! Everyone worked hard to put this trip together and was rewarded for doing so. All in all- a great trip, with a fantastic group of guys who made it possible! So get out on some of these offshore trips and don’t wait for the reports- be a part of them!

 Full Day Porgy Fishing
Porgy fishing was slightly better than yesterday. Everyone went home with about 20-30 fish on average. Some nice sized pordies were caught. The seabass were a plenty however. Peter Ferguson won the pool with a 3.6lbs porgy.
